What Is Modal Fabric? Properties, Benefits and How to Care for It

Modal is a semi-synthetic textile fibre produced from the cellulose of beech wood. Thanks to a refined spinning process, the cellulose strands end up longer and more uniform than those used in regular viscose, which gives modal noticeably better mechanical and comfort properties. In short: modal can be seen as the upgraded successor to traditional viscose.

What kind of fabric is modal?

Modal has a soft, smooth hand-feel that sits somewhere between silk and high-quality cotton. The surface looks slightly satiny, which is also why people regularly mix it up with viscose or rayon. The big difference is that modal feels more luxurious to the skin, while still offering the practical wearing comfort you would expect from cotton.

Although modal contains man-made fibres, the raw material is fully natural: cellulose obtained from beech trees is dissolved, spun into yarn and then woven or knitted into fabric. That makes modal a so-called "regenerated" fibre — natural in origin, but engineered in production.

The advantages of modal fabric

For a single fibre, modal ticks an impressive number of boxes. In several areas it actually outperforms regular cotton.

• High wearing comfort. The smooth, supple structure feels gentle on the skin, even on warm days.
• Excellent moisture management. Modal absorbs around 50% more moisture than cotton, so garments don't quickly feel damp or sticky.
• Easy to dye and print. Modal takes colour with relatively low energy and chemical input compared to cotton, which is good news for both sharpness of print and environmental impact.
• Long-lasting colour and shape. The fabric resists shrinking and pilling and tends to keep its colour well, even after repeated washes.
• Naturally more sustainable than cotton. Beech trees grow in managed forests and need significantly less water than cotton plants, lowering the overall footprint of the fibre.

The disadvantages of modal fabric

No fabric is perfect, and modal has a few drawbacks worth knowing before you start a project. The fibres are relatively elastic, so modal can stretch out a little over time. The fabric can also wrinkle more easily than crisp cotton variants. For most use cases — dresses, T-shirts, soft furnishings — these downsides are more than balanced out by the comfort and finish modal delivers.

How to wash and care for modal

One of the great things about modal is how easy it is to maintain. Pure 100% modal can be treated much like cotton:

• It tolerates a wide range of wash temperatures, including hot washes up to 60 °C.
• It can go in the tumble dryer on a low setting.
• It irons well at moderate temperatures.

That said, modal is often blended with elastane, polyester or cotton, and the wash recommendation always depends on the full fibre composition of the garment. Always check the care label first to avoid surprises.

A more sustainable alternative to modal

If sustainability is high on your priority list, lyocell is worth a serious look. Lyocell is produced in a closed-loop process that recycles solvents and uses significantly less water and fewer chemicals than modal production. The fabric feels remarkably similar — soft, smooth and breathable — so it works as a near drop-in replacement for many modal applications.
