Printing on Knit Fabrics: Techniques, Considerations, and Best Practices

Knit fabrics are everywhere — in comfortable t-shirts, stretchy leggings, cozy sweaters, and performance wear. Their inherent stretchiness and soft hand make them beloved by designers and customers alike. But this same stretchiness introduces unique challenges when printing. Understanding how to print successfully on knits unlocks a world of creative possibilities for contemporary clothing design.

Understanding Knit Fabric Structure

Knit fabric is constructed by interlocking loops of yarn, creating a fabric with inherent elasticity. Unlike woven fabric (made by interlacing horizontal and vertical threads), knit fabric stretches and recovers naturally. This property makes it ideal for fitted garments, athletic wear, and anything requiring comfort and flexibility.

The structure also influences how printing techniques work. Ink must adhere to loops rather than a flat weave, and the fabric's tendency to move means printing processes must account for potential distortion.

Key Differences: Knit vs. Woven Fabric

Woven fabric consists of threads woven horizontally and vertically, creating a stable, rigid structure. It holds its shape and doesn't stretch significantly. Traditional fabrics like canvas, linen, and twill are woven.

Knit fabric uses interlocking loops, making it elastic and conforming. It moves with your body and recovers to original shape. Jersey, athleisure, and most t-shirt fabrics are knits.

For printing, this difference matters profoundly. Woven fabrics are more forgiving of slight misalignments because they don't shift. Knits require more precision because the fabric will stretch and move during and after printing.

Printing Techniques for Knit Fabrics

Sublimation Printing

Sublimation involves printing design onto transfer paper, then using heat and pressure to bond the ink directly into the fabric. The ink converts from solid to gas and becomes part of the fiber itself.

Ideal for: Polyester knits, where the ink bonds at a molecular level.

Advantages:

  • Vibrant, rich colors with excellent saturation
  • Durable; colors won't crack or peel when the fabric stretches
  • No feel on the fabric; prints are soft to touch
  • Perfect for all-over designs and photographic images

Considerations:

  • Works best on synthetic fibers, particularly recycled polyester
  • Requires specific heat and pressure parameters

At Vivix Prints, we use sublimation printing for our U-Circular collection — knit fabrics made from 100% recycled polyester. The result is beautiful, durable prints on sustainable materials. We extend this technique to products like velvet plaids and specialty towels that benefit from sublimation's vibrant output.

Digital Printing

Digital printing transfers designs directly onto fabric using specialized printers. The technique offers unlimited color options and can handle intricate detail.

Ideal for: Both cotton and polyester knits, with slight variations in preparation and finishing.

Advantages:

  • Unlimited colors and photographic detail
  • No setup costs; print small or large quantities efficiently
  • Precise color control
  • Works on various fiber types

Considerations:

  • Requires proper pre-treatment of natural fibers
  • Post-printing finishing (steaming, washing) ensures color fastness

Screen Printing

Screen printing uses a mesh screen with a stencil to transfer ink onto fabric. It's been used for decades and remains popular.

Challenges on knit fabric:

  • The fabric's stretchiness means special care is needed to prevent ink cracking when the garment is worn
  • Ink application must be precise; too much ink can pool and crack

Best for: Small design elements or spot prints rather than all-over coverage on knits.

Heat Transfer Printing

Heat transfer printing applies pre-printed designs to fabric using heat and pressure. The transfer paper carries the design, which is then pressed onto the fabric.

Advantages:

  • Adheres well to stretchy material
  • High-quality results with good color saturation
  • Works on various fibers

Considerations:

  • The transfer creates a slight hand on the fabric (not as soft as sublimation)
  • Suitable for detailed designs and bold graphics

Knit Fabrics Available for Printing

Vivix Prints offers several knit options:

  • U-Circular Athleisure — lightweight, breathable recycled polyester perfect for active wear
  • U-Circular Chiffon — delicate and fluid with elegant drape
  • U-Circular Peach Jersey — soft, smooth jersey with a luxurious hand
  • U-Circular Silk Satin Heavy — rich, lustrous fabric with substantial weight

All are 100% recycled polyester, making them sustainable without compromising print quality or durability.

Designing for Knit Printing: Key Considerations

Account for stretch — The fabric will shift slightly during printing and wear. Design with this in mind; critical image elements should be positioned away from seams and edges where movement is greatest.

Plan repeat patterns — If designing a repeating pattern, ensure continuity. Small variations are acceptable and add organic character.

Use sufficient contrast — Colors should distinguish clearly. Test grayscale versions to ensure visibility.

Consider seam placement — All-over prints work beautifully on knits; positioned prints require careful alignment to account for the garment's final construction.

The Production Process at Vivix Prints

We combine technical knowledge with years of experience printing knit fabrics:

  1. Design Assessment — We review your artwork for knit-specific considerations
  2. Pre-treatment — Fabric is prepared for optimal ink adhesion
  3. Printing — Using sublimation, digital, or appropriate technique for your fabric choice
  4. Post-finishing — Steaming and washing ensure color fastness and durability
  5. Quality Check — Each piece is inspected before shipping

The result is a knit garment or fabric that looks vibrant and professional, with prints that maintain beauty through repeated wear and washing.

Starting Your Knit Printing Project

Ready to bring your designs to life on knit fabric?

Step 1: Choose your knit — Order fabric swatches to evaluate feel and hand. Our fabric book contains samples of all knits, or order specific swatches to test.

Step 2: Prepare your design — Use our design guidelines for knit fabrics. Upload your artwork to our design generator.

Step 3: Review preview — Our system shows how your design will appear on your selected knit before production begins.

Step 4: Order — Specify quantity (minimum one meter) and production commences.
